Beijing has called on Tel Aviv and Beirut to demonstrate accountability as a fragile 10-day ceasefire comes into effect between Israel and Lebanon. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized political solutions over military confrontation, urging both parties to preserve negotiation momentum despite early reports of Israeli shelling in southern Lebanese territories.

Beijing has issued a formal appeal to both Israeli and Lebanese authorities, urging them to demonstrate maximum accountability following the implementation of a temporary ten-day cessation of hostilities. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed media representatives in the Chinese capital, stating that Beijing welcomes any initiative that facilitates an end to military operations and establishes durable peace in the volatile region.

The Chinese official emphasized the necessity for all involved factions to uphold their obligations, sustain the current diplomatic momentum, and pursue conflict resolution through peaceful dialogue rather than armed confrontation. This position reflects Beijing's growing involvement in Middle Eastern mediation efforts and its stated commitment to regional stability.

Ten-Day Armistice Takes Effect

The temporary cessation of fighting follows intensive diplomatic consultations mediated by Washington, where American President Donald Trump revealed that both nations consented to the brief armistice commencing Thursday at 21:00 GMT. The agreement emerged from negotiations held earlier in the week within the United States capital, marking a potential pause in weeks of devastating warfare along the Israel-Lebanon frontier.

Officials in Washington characterized the deal as a critical window for humanitarian relief and further diplomatic engagement, though the limited timeframe of ten days suggests significant challenges remain in reaching a permanent settlement between the conflicting parties.

Alleged Violations Emerge

Despite the agreement formally taking effect, Lebanon's military forces documented multiple breaches allegedly committed by Israeli forces within hours of the deadline. Reports indicate intermittent artillery fire directed at civilian settlements in southern portions of the country, threatening to undermine the fragile truce before meaningful negotiations can advance.

These early violations highlight the precarious nature of the ceasefire and the difficulty of maintaining battlefield discipline among ground forces, even when political leadership commits to stopping the shooting. The Lebanese army continues to monitor border areas for additional infractions that could escalate tensions anew.

Regional War Context

The current truce emerges against the backdrop of broader regional warfare initiated when Washington and Tel Aviv launched coordinated strikes against Iranian territories on February 28. This aggression triggered counterattacks from Tehran targeting Gulf state partners of the United States, alongside retaliatory operations by the Lebanese Hezbollah organization.

Subsequent Israeli campaigns against Hezbollah positions have resulted in approximately 2,200 fatalities and forced the displacement of roughly one million civilians throughout the past month and a half. Concurrently, military activities between the involved parties and Tehran have paused, with international mediators currently pursuing comprehensive settlement frameworks to permanently terminate the Persian Gulf conflict.

Opposition to Venezuela Sanctions

Separately, spokesperson Guo articulated Beijing's firm opposition to punitive economic measures imposed by Washington against Caracas, describing such actions as illegitimate unilateral interventions lacking foundation in international law or United Nations Security Council authorization. The Chinese official defended Sino-Venezuelan commercial and financial partnerships as legitimate undertakings safeguarded by both bilateral statutes and international legal frameworks.

Consequently, Beijing expects its sovereign economic interests and legal entitlements within Venezuelan territory to receive full protection from any external interference, signaling China's determination to maintain strategic alliances despite American pressure tactics.
