Khalil al-Hayya leads a senior Hamas delegation to the Egyptian capital on Sunday to discuss efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire agreement, marking his first visit to Egypt since assuming leadership of the Palestinian movement.

Hamas political bureau chief Khalil al-Hayya is due to arrive in Cairo on Sunday at the head of a senior delegation, marking his first visit to Egypt since assuming leadership of the Palestinian group for talks aimed at consolidating the fragile ceasefire in Gaza.

Talks with intelligence chief

A Hamas source told Anadolu that “a high-level leadership delegation headed by the movement’s leader, Khalil al-Hayya, will arrive tonight in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to hold talks with Egyptian officials.” The delegation will meet General Intelligence Service chief Hassan Rashad to discuss the Palestinian issue and efforts to shore up the truce agreement.

The contingent includes Mohammed Darwish, chief of the Hamas Shura Council, alongside Khaled Meshaal, who oversees the movement's external operations, and Zaher Jabarin, the group's West Bank chief. Basem Naim, head of the Arab and Islamic Relations Office, is also part of the group traveling to the Egyptian capital.

War context

The visit comes as mediators seek to stabilize the ceasefire that has paused the war in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians since October 2023. Al-Hayya assumed leadership of Hamas following the assassination of former political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last July, with Cairo maintaining its role as a key mediator between the movement and regional actors.
