Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Germany’s unsuccessful bid for a non-permanent seat marks a stark diplomatic rebuke from the international community, accusing Berlin of weapons supplies to Israel and complicity in Gaza alongside support for US-Israeli military aggression against Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Friday that Germany’s failure to secure a UN Security Council seat reflects growing international outrage over Berlin’s weapons supplies to Israel and its stance on the conflict in Gaza.

Diplomatic rebuke

In a statement posted on X, Baghaei described the unsuccessful bid as "a stark rebuke from the international community." He said Germany’s failure to secure a seat on the 15-member council for the first time in decades reflects growing global anger over what he called Berlin’s irresponsible, hypocritical, and complicit stance toward the genocide in Gaza — as well as its support for US-Israeli military aggression against Iran.

Accusations of complicity

Baghaei accused Germany of being one of Israel’s largest weapons suppliers and alleged that Berlin had consistently justified Israeli actions against Palestinians while failing to condemn recent military operations. "The world is changing. Nations are no longer judging governments by their lofty rhetoric about international law, but by their actual behavior," he said, adding that "those who choose to ignore this shift will inevitably pay a heavy diplomatic price."

German response

German officials expressed disappointment over the outcome of the UN General Assembly vote this week, while pledging to continue supporting international peace and security initiatives through the United Nations and other global institutions. Berlin has served on the Security Council multiple times in recent decades, making this week’s defeat a rare setback for German multilateral diplomacy efforts.
