Sites in Palmyra, T-4 airbase targeted; no immediate response from Syrian authorities

The Israeli army announced late Friday that it carried out airstrikes on strategic military assets in central Syria.

“Shortly ago, the Israeli army conducted strikes targeting strategic military capabilities that were still present in Syrian army bases in Palmyra and the T-4 airbase,” the military said in a statement, without providing details.

The army also shared a video of the attack on its official page on X.

There was no immediate response from Syrian authorities.

Israel has been carrying out near-daily airstrikes in Syria for months, resulting in civilian casualties and the destruction of military sites, equipment and ammunition belonging to the Syrian army.

Despite repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty, the new Syrian administration, led by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, has not posed a direct threat to Tel Aviv.

On Dec. 8, 2024, Syrian factions took control of the country, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of the Assad family governance.

Since 1967, Israel has occupied most of the Golan Heights, and following the collapse of the Bashar Assad regime, took control of the Syrian buffer zone, declaring null a 1974 disengagement agreement between the two sides.
