Macron says global turmoil could be ‘European moment’ for EU

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that current global disorder could become a defining “European moment,” urging the EU to transform its economic and strategic weight into genuine geopolitical power. Speaking in Athens, he called for deeper integration, faster decision-making, and a stronger European defense pillar within NATO.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Friday that the ongoing global turmoil could mark a defining “European moment,” arguing that the European Union has a rare opportunity to assert itself as a geopolitical power. “I think this very moment could be the European moment,” Macron said during an Ekathimerini event in Athens. Citing global disorder, uncertainty over US reliability, and growing pressure on the international order, he said Europe’s strengths — including predictability, economic weight, and respect for international law — position it to play a larger role.
From peace to power
Macron framed Europe’s geopolitical ambitions as the next chapter of the European project, noting that the bloc has already achieved peace and prosperity despite its complexity. “There is no reason we will be unable to write a new one,” he said, arguing that Europe must move beyond being only “a peace place and a single market” and become “a geopolitical power.” He emphasized that Europe already has the scale in defense, trade, and finance, but must turn these assets into influence through deeper integration and protection of key industries.
A wake-up call for Europe
Macron renewed calls for stronger European defense and a more robust European pillar within NATO, urging the bloc to “buy European and produce as Europeans.” He described the moment as “a wake-up call for Europe,” calling for strategic autonomy and greater unity. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis echoed the message, calling the coming years “make or break for Europe” and urging stronger defense, competitiveness, and energy security.
