A poll by U.K. newspaper revealed most British people are clueless about the number of countries in the European Union
The results of an exclusive ComRes poll conducted for U.K. daily The Independent shows that most British people have no idea about how many countries are in the EU.
Of the 2,043 people surveyed in early May, 73 percent thought there were 29 countries in the EU, while there are 28.
It was also found that 14 percent believed there is an official European army, while 61 percent of the people believed most U.K. laws are set by the EU, when in fact official figures put EU regulation at anywhere between 15 and 50 percent of U.K. law, including laws "influenced" by Brussels, The Independent stated.
It is also figured out that 70 percent of people do not know EU's official anthem, "Ode to Joy."
A referendum is being held on Thursday, June 23, to decide whether the U.K. should leave the EU or continue to stay.
Some of those in favor of a British withdrawal from the EU argue that being a member of the EU undermines Parliamentary sovereignty.
The EU is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries that was first established after World War II to foster economic cooperation.
A referendum is basically a vote in which everyone of voting age can take part, normally giving a "Yes" or "No" answer to a question.
