Myanmar Military Strike Kills 32 at Buddhist Festival: Report

Myanmar's military junta has conducted a deadly aerial bombardment on a Buddhist festival in the country's northwest, resulting in at least 32 fatalities and over 50 injuries according to The Irrawaddy news outlet. The Monday evening attack targeted participants attending an anti-regime candlelight vigil near a Chaung-U Township village during celebrations for Myanmar's traditional Lighting Festival.

Local sources confirmed that numerous children were among the dead and injured when military paragliders dropped explosives on the gathering. A resident reported that five victims belonged to non-violent movements and local resistance fighters, while the majority were civilians attending the religious observance. The explosive force scattered victims' remains, complicating identification efforts according to witnesses.

The initial assault was followed minutes later by two additional bomb deployments in the same location, increasing casualties and creating panic among survivors. The festival was organized to mark the full moon of Thadingyut, the seventh month in Myanmar's traditional lunar calendar, which typically features illuminated celebrations throughout Buddhist communities across the Southeast Asian nation.

The Sagaing Region has experienced intense conflict between Myanmar's military administration and opposition forces since the 2021 coup.
