Syria peace talks in Astana
The International Meeting on Syrian Settlement, held in Kazakhstan's capital Astana, aims to achieve cessation of hostilities and a political solution to the conflict.
Peace talks aimed at ending the Syrian conflict entered the second day on Tuesday in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana.
The talks, which focus on extending the cease-fire that came into effect on Dec. 30, 2016, have been brokered by Turkey, which backs the opposition, and Russia and Iran, who support Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The meeting is due to last until Tuesday evening, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said. However, the duration will be extended if need be.
The first day of indirect talks in Astana between the Syrian government and rebels has given grounds for cautious optimism about potential progress.
The Syria peace talks are being held at Rixos President hotel.
