US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump has signaled that Washington could still pursue a major military escalation against Iran, declining to reveal what will follow the latest round of talks. Trump also asserted that the US Navy has full control over the Strait of Hormuz, saying American forces have cleared mines from the strategic waterway while warning Iran could still attempt disruptions.
US President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States retains the capability to launch a major escalation against Iran, leaving the next phase of the conflict uncertain after recent negotiations.
Trump keeps military option open
Asked at the White House about what would follow the latest talks, which he had previously portrayed as Iran’s final opportunity to avoid military action, Trump declined to provide details.
When questioned about whether a “massive escalation” remained possible, Trump said Washington had the means to take such action if he decided to proceed.
“Well, we have that certain ability if we want to do that,” Trump said, adding, “Yeah, you’ll find out.”
Trump also argued that Iran should compensate the United States for damage allegedly caused over the past 50 years. “If there’s damages to be paid, I think Iran should pay those damages,” he said.
US claims full control of Hormuz
Trump also addressed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, saying the waterway is currently open for maritime traffic.
He said the US Navy is exercising complete control over the strait under a blockade that he described as highly effective. According to Trump, vessels can pass through under US conditions, while ships heading toward Iran are not being permitted to enter.
Trump says mines cleared from strait
The US president acknowledged that Iran could still seek to interfere with shipping, including by placing naval mines. He nevertheless claimed American forces had searched the waterway and removed mines.
“We’ve mine swept the entire strait,” Trump said, asserting that the United States controls the passage “100%.”
Trump added that Iran could still “make trouble,” but argued that the country lacks the financial resources to sustain such disruption.
