Turkish defense industry firm develops highly effective munition which is a part of the Turkish Armed Forces’ inventory in Operation Olive Branch
Turkey’s domestic defense industry has successfully developed the Smart Micro Munition (MAM-L), which weighs 22.5 kilograms. It is optimized for small deployment platforms such as drones, and boasts a range of 8,000 kilometers.
The MAM-L developed by Turkish defense giant ROKETSAN is a part of the Turkish Armed Forces’ inventory and is being used in Turkey’s Olive Branch operation.
Operation Olive Branch was initiated on Jan. 20 in Afrin to establish security and stability, eliminate PKK/KCK/PYD-YPG and Daesh terrorists, and save locals from their oppression and cruelty.
With its high explosive fragmentation warhead, MAM-L is highly effective against light structures, unarmored ground vehicles, radar antennas and soft targets like weapon pits and personnel, within a 25 meter radius. The alternative with tandem high energy anti-tank warhead is effectively used against heavy armored tanks.
MAM-L can be used efficiently at ranges of up to eight kilometers, depending on the altitude from which it is released.
MAM-L is a variant of the Long Range Anti-Tank Missile System Laser Guided (L-UMTAS), which was also developed by the same firm. The MAM-L is being successfully used in operations involving drones.
Selçuk Yaşar, President and CEO of ROKETSAN, believes MAM-L will soon become the preference of many countries: “The design and application concept of the MAM-L provides its users with the capability of effectively neutralizing time critical targets, particularly those that arise during reconnaissance and surveillance missions. Meanwhile, thanks to its precision guidance and small dimensions, the MAM-L offers a solution with a low collateral damage. When compared with all the other capabilities of the armed forces, a combination of the MAM-L and a tactical UAV is the most cost effective solution. We believe that soon other countries will also start taking an interest in this solution.”
