Türkiye is set to launch its first domestically produced high-speed train in 2026, capable of reaching 225 kilometers per hour. The national railway initiative also includes nine electric train sets and 30 mainline locomotives as part of Türkiye's rail system indigenization efforts.

Türkiye will introduce its first entirely domestically designed and manufactured high-speed train in 2026 as part of a comprehensive national railway development program. According to the 2026 Presidential Annual Program, the prototype high-speed train will achieve maximum speeds of 225 kilometers per hour, representing a significant milestone in Türkiye's transportation infrastructure development and domestic industrial capabilities.

Comprehensive Railway Modernization

The national railway initiative includes the parallel development of nine electric train sets capable of reaching 160 kilometers per hour, alongside approximately thirty national electric mainline locomotives. Turkish railway manufacturer Turasas is leading the design and prototyping efforts for these vehicles, focusing on increasing the domestic content ratio in key railway components and systems through extensive research and development activities.

Manufacturing Infrastructure Expansion

Supporting this industrial expansion, Turasas has begun establishing a specialized electric high-speed train production facility in Sakarya province. The 15,000-square-meter factory will possess an annual production capacity of twelve high-speed train sets and is projected to contribute approximately $83.1 million annually to the national economy while creating advanced manufacturing employment opportunities.

Strategic Transportation Objectives

The 2026 program prioritizes rail and maritime transport systems to minimize environmental impact, reduce logistics costs, and enhance energy efficiency throughout Türkiye's transportation sector. The increased deployment of electric traction vehicles will support the ongoing electrification of the national railway network, aligning with broader sustainability goals and reducing dependence on imported transportation technology.
