Les Elephants score the goal at 64th minute with forward Jonathan Kodjia

Cote d'Ivoire defeated South Africa 1-0 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group D match in Cairo on Monday.

During their opening group match at the Al Salaam Stadium, Les Elephants scored the goal at the 64th minute with forward Jonathan Kodjia.

Cote d'Ivoire shared the top spot in the group with Morocco who won 1-0 on Sunday against Namibia.

The 32nd AFCON tournament is being hosted by Egypt -- the country's fifth time -- from June 21 to July 19.

This year, the competition has expanded from 16 participating teams to 24.

The top two nations from six groups and the four best third-place nations will qualify for the round of 16.
