Galatasaray snatches late draw against Fenerbahce

Late equalizer helps Galatasaray cling to a 1-1 draw against archrival Fenerbahce on latter’s home turf in Istanbul derby

Fenerbahce drew against archrival Galatasaray 1-1 in a derby Sunday evening in Turkish football's top division Spor Toto Super League at Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul.

Fenerbahce scored the opener in the 37th minute when the Yellow Canaries' Brazilian attacking midfielder Diego found the net right outside the penalty area, scoring his first goal this season.

He was then brandished a yellow card by the referee as he kicked the corner flag while celebrating.

The home team appeared to push the brakes down the stretch, seeking to preserve the narrow lead, all the while setting in motion a Galatasaray comeback late in the second half when the Lions managed to equalize thanks to a close-range header by winger Olcan Adin in 84'.

Adin came on for left-back Lionel Carole -- who sustained an injury in the first half -- in 41'.

In standings Galatasaray and Fenerbahce each raised their points to 18, trailing one point behind league leader Besiktas -- city rival to both clubs. Besiktas will play away against Antalyaspor on Monday evening.

Fenerbahce has the run of recent history over Galatasaray -- the Yellow Canaries have not been beaten at home by their rival since December 1999.

Sunday's game ended the Lions' five-match winning streak, after they beat Trabzonspor (1-0), Gaziantepspor (2-1), Medipol Basaksehir (2-0) and Genclerbirligi (4-1) in the league.

Galatasaray also edged out Benfica 2-1 in UEFA Champions League match on Oct. 21.

The Lions' Dutch star Wesley Sneijder is out at the next game against Eskisehirspor at Turk Telekom Arena after being booked Sunday.
