Iran fight back twice to draw 2-2 with New Zealand in World Cup opener

Iran came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw with New Zealand in their Group G match at SoFi Stadium. New Zealand took the lead in the 7th minute, but Ramin Rezaeian equalized in the 32nd. The All Whites regained the lead in the 54th, only for Mohammed Mohebbi to level again 10 minutes later. Iran top Group G.

Iran mounted a determined comeback twice to earn a 2-2 draw with New Zealand in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium in the United States. New Zealand struck first in the seventh minute when Elijah fired a volley into the net, despite Iran starting the game on the offensive. Iran pushed relentlessly after a hydration break, and their efforts paid off in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian flicked the ball over the New Zealand goalkeeper to level the score.

Second-half drama

The game remained tied at halftime, but New Zealand regained the lead in the 54th minute. Just received a slide pass from Chris Wood and found the back of the net, putting the All Whites ahead once again. However, Iran responded swiftly. In the 64th minute, a brilliant cross from Rezaeian was met by a powerful header from Mohammed Mohebbi, making the score 2-2 just 10 minutes after New Zealand’s second goal. Neither side could find a winner in the remaining minutes.

Group standings

With the draw, Iran sit at the top of Group G on goal difference, while New Zealand are second. The match was played in sweltering conditions, with temperatures exceeding 28°C, but both teams showed resilience.
