Artificial intelligence can transform waste management by tracking materials through recycling systems and reducing emissions, according to Greyparrot co-founder Ambarish Mitra. He spoke at the Zero Waste Forum in Istanbul, highlighting the economic potential of a circular economy.

Artificial intelligence systems could play a transformative role in addressing the global waste crisis while generating significant economic opportunities, according to technology entrepreneur Ambarish Mitra. The co-founder of UK-based waste intelligence company Greyparrot made these comments during the Zero Waste Forum in Istanbul, where international experts gathered to discuss sustainable development strategies under the patronage of First Lady Emine Erdogan, who chairs the UN High-Level Advisory Council on Zero Waste.

Connecting Waste Reduction to Climate Goals

Mitra emphasized the direct connection between global waste and climate change, noting that waste accounts for approximately 4.5% to 6% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. "Zero waste is a climate action," he stated, explaining that recovering materials reduces extraction from nature, lowers energy consumption, and cuts carbon emissions. He advocated for reframing waste as "misplaced resources" rather than refuse, suggesting this perspective could help reduce global emissions by up to 10% and contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C climate target.

Economic Potential of Circular Systems

Beyond environmental benefits, Mitra highlighted the substantial economic opportunity in optimizing how materials are produced, disposed of, and reused. "It's not just about bins and recycling. It's really about redesigning the economy," he told attendees at the Istanbul forum. He estimated that improved material management represents hundreds of billions of dollars in potential value across global supply chains, with entrepreneurs having numerous opportunities to develop solutions throughout the waste value chain.

Data-Driven Solutions Through AI Technology

Mitra's company, Greyparrot, develops AI-powered systems for waste recovery facilities that analyze and track materials throughout disposal and recycling processes. He explained that data collected through these systems can help governments set effective policies, enable brands to redesign packaging, and assist cities in planning infrastructure. "Data changes both design and behavior, forming the foundation of nearly every circular economy solution," Mitra said, emphasizing that accurate information about waste composition is essential for creating effective material management systems.
