New DNA analysis tool can predict age and origin from tiny samples

A European research consortium has developed an advanced forensic tool that accurately estimates a person's age and biogeographical origin by analyzing DNA methylation patterns. The VISAGE project's innovation allows analysis of small or degraded samples, narrowing suspect pools with an age prediction margin of error under three years.
An international team of scientists has developed a sophisticated new forensic tool capable of estimating a person's age and biogeographical origin with high precision by examining subtle chemical modifications in their DNA. The breakthrough emerged from the VISAGE project, a European consortium involving institutions like Poland's Jagiellonian University and its Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police.
The Science of DNA Methylation
The technology's core relies on analyzing DNA methylation, a natural process where chemical groups attach to DNA, influencing gene activity and changing predictably with age. While age estimation concepts using this method have existed for over a decade, researchers noted their limitations with the small, damaged biological samples typical in real-world police investigations. The new model overcomes these constraints through refined laboratory and software analysis.
Forensic Applications and Polish Contribution
Dr. Ewelina Pospiech, a Polish scientist involved in the project, highlighted its significance for forensic science. "The more precisely the age of the person from whom the sample originates can be determined, the more the pool of suspects is narrowed," she explained. The tool can now predict age with a margin of error of three years or less, a marked improvement in accuracy that represents a major step forward for global law enforcement capabilities.
Global Validation and Future Use
The newly created tool is currently undergoing testing and validation by forensic experts worldwide. This development in genomic technology showcases the potential for international scientific collaboration to yield practical tools that enhance public security, a field where Türkiye's own institutions continue to make significant advancements.
