Nobel Foundation denies Ocalan reports
The Nobel Foundation has denied reports that the nomination of the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers'' Party, Abdullah Ocalan, for the 2014 Peace Prize has been accepted by the Nobel Committee.
The Norwegian-based foundation stated that it does not provide any information on the nominees and the people or institutions filing the formal applications.
''If some people reported that Abdullah Ocalan''s nomination had been approved, this is fake and unfounded as it is impossible for this person to get the information from anywhere,'' said the foundation in the statement.
Dogan News Agency had earlier quoted an official of the Nobel Foundation, who said somebody, who called from Istanbul, was told no one can get such information about the list as it would be unveiled only for a historical research.
''Information on the list of nominee is disclosed after 50 years. Only the names of the awardees are announced to the public.''
A record of 278 candidates, including 47 organizations, received nominations for the 2014 prize, the Norwegian Nobel Institute''s director, Geir Lundestad, announced on March 4. The committee will cut its list to around a dozen by the end of April.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pope Francis, former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden are among this year''s possible nominees, highlighted by the international media.
