TRNC vows probe into deadly ferry capsizing off Kyrenia

TRNC Public Works and Transport Minister Erhan Arikli on Sunday pledged a comprehensive investigation into passenger allegations surrounding a fatal ferry capsizing off Kyrenia that killed eight people, vowing to examine claims that crew members locked doors and fled as the vessel took on water shortly after departure.

Investigation launched into capsizing

Speaking to Anadolu, Arikli said the Public Works and Transport Ministry would conduct a separate probe alongside the police investigation, with findings regarding the vessel's documents, seaworthiness, port permits, and safety measures to be made public. He confirmed that the ship's captain and seven crew members remain in custody as authorities examine allegations that passengers were trapped behind locked doors and that the captain abandoned the vessel during the emergency.

Vessel took on water minutes after departure

The high-speed passenger ferry Filo Jet, which operates between Kyrenia and the Port of Tasucu in Mersin, Türkiye, began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing Kyrenia around midday on Sunday. Survivors told Anadolu that crew members failed to heed warnings as the vessel listed, forcing the captain to attempt a return to port before the ship capsized in view of the coastline. Of the 267 people aboard — 259 passengers and eight crew — 241 were rescued while eight were confirmed dead, leaving 18 people still unaccounted for.

Search continues for missing passengers

Search and rescue operations involving helicopters and specialized teams are ongoing for the 18 missing individuals, according to authorities. The TRNC Security Forces Command, Coast Guard Command, Civil Defense Organization and Police General Directorate are leading the effort with support from Türkiye's Coast Guard Command, Naval Forces Command, and Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
