Türkiye declares its Aegean Sea navigational warnings 'indefinite'

The Turkish National Defense Ministry has stated that its navigational warnings, issued as objections to Greek activities in the Aegean Sea, are indefinite. In a statement on Thursday, the ministry countered reports in the Greek press that suggested these warnings had a two-year limit, asserting they remain in effect to challenge actions Ankara deems in violation of international law.

Stance on Aegean Maritime Jurisdiction and Demilitarization

The ministry specified that the notices, known as NAVTEX, underscore the requirement for all research activities concerning the Aegean continental shelf to be coordinated with Türkiye. It also warned that military activities in areas including the territorial waters of islands with demilitarized status could endanger navigation and breach international treaties. The statement affirmed that the Turkish Armed Forces would continue to counter, within legal frameworks, unilateral actions that disregard Türkiye's maritime rights and interests.

Positions on Syria and Iran

The ministry's briefing also addressed other regional issues. Regarding Syria, it criticized the YPG/SDF for violating extended ceasefire agreements, actions it said harm the integration process. Ankara welcomed Damascus's opening of a humanitarian corridor and reiterated support for Syria's fight against terrorism based on the "one state, one army" principle, respecting Syria's unity and territorial integrity. On Iran, the ministry expressed Türkiye's desire to avoid new regional conflicts and stated that all necessary measures have been coordinated with relevant institutions to mitigate potential negative developments.
