Türkiye's Foreign Ministry on Friday extended condolences to Japan over the deadly earthquake that struck Kumamoto prefecture earlier this week, expressing deep sorrow for the significant loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the disaster.
In a statement issued earlier in the day, the ministry said it learned with "deep sorrow" of the 36 confirmed fatalities. The message extended sympathies to the bereaved families and the Japanese people, adding that authorities in Ankara wished a speedy recovery to all those injured in the temblor.
Widespread devastation
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto on July 28 at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to seismic monitoring agencies. The temblor killed 36 people and injured dozens more, according to initial reports from local authorities.
The powerful quake triggered fires across the prefecture and caused multiple road and bridge collapses. Rescue teams scrambled to reach affected areas amid the damaged infrastructure and ongoing aftershocks.
