Around 1000 Palestinians detained in West Bank sin
Israel detained around 1000 Palestinians, including 25 MPs, in the West Bank since mid-June, says a local NGO
Israeli army forces detained eight Palestinians, including a Hamas lawmaker, in the West Bank in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a local NGO.
"An Israeli force detained MP Mahmoud al-Khatib from his home in Jericho in southern West Bank," Ahrar Studies Center said in a statement. Al-Khatib's detention increases to 36 the number of lawmakers, mostly from Hamas, held by Israel, the statement said.
The Israeli army also detained seven Palestinians in the West Bank cities of Ramallah, Bethlehem and Hebron, said the NGO. Israeli authorities were not immediately available for comment.
The Palestinian Prisoners Society, a local NGO, said earlier that the Israeli army had detained around 1000 Palestinians, including 25 lawmakers, in the West Bank since the disappearance and the subsequent death of three Jewish teens in June.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had accused Hamas of kidnapping the three, whose bodies were found in late June. The Israeli army has also been pounding the Gaza Strip since last Monday, killing at least 194 Palestinians, mostly civilians, injuring more than 1400 others and destroying hundreds of homes.
