Denmark has expressed strong diplomatic concern following the United States' announcement of a special envoy to Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The move, ordered by US President Donald Trump, has been met with sharp criticism from Danish politicians who view it as a provocative intervention and a signal of Washington's persistent interest in acquiring the strategic Arctic island.

Political Backlash and Diplomatic Response

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that the government would summon the US ambassador to Copenhagen to seek an official explanation for the appointment. Lawmakers from multiple parties echoed the sentiment, with Karsten Honge, the Socialist Party's spokesman on Greenland, labeling the decision "dangerous for Greenland and the realm, but in reality also for the whole world." Other political figures, including Social Liberal Party leader Martin Lidegaard, noted the appointment confirms Trump's unresolved ambition regarding the territory, while stressing that "Greenland's future is and will be Greenland's own choice."

The Envoy's Controversial Background and Mission

President Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to the role, describing him as someone who "understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security." Governor Landry is a known advocate for US annexation of the island, having publicly stated earlier this year that the US "need[s] to ensure that Greenland joins the United States."
