Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov cautioned that mounting tensions between Washington, Tel Aviv and Tehran are undermining stability across the Caspian region. Speaking in Astana alongside his Kazakh counterpart, the veteran diplomat denounced recent attacks against Iran's Bandar Anzali port while urging all littoral states to preserve the inland waterway as a sanctuary for commerce and diplomacy.

Moscow's top diplomat has raised alarms regarding the deterioration of security conditions surrounding the world's largest inland body of water. During discussions held in Kazakhstan's capital, Sergey Lavrov emphasized that the prolonged confrontation between Washington, Tel Aviv and Tehran is generating adverse ripple effects throughout the Caspian basin. The veteran statesman insisted that this strategic waterway, bordered by five sovereign nations, must continue serving as a domain exclusively reserved for peaceful collaboration and mutual economic development rather than becoming entangled in external military disputes.

Condemnation of Bandar Anzali attack

The Russian foreign minister specifically addressed the recent military action targeting Iran's northern maritime facility. Lavrov deemed the strike against Bandar Anzali, which transpired several weeks earlier, as completely indefensible under international norms. He highlighted that this particular harbor maintains vital significance for commercial and logistical operations benefiting all five littoral states—Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran. Any aggression against such infrastructure, he argued, ultimately undermines the collective economic interests and transportation networks binding these regional powers together.

Pathways to regional De-escalation

Alongside his Kazakh counterpart Yermek Kosherbayev, Lavrov advocated for immediate diplomatic interventions to resolve the broader Persian Gulf crisis. Both ministers expressed support for expedited political settlements encompassing the entire Middle East theater. The Russian official further drew attention to the ongoing stagnation regarding Palestinian statehood formation, particularly noting the deadlock plaguing Lebanon. He stressed that sustainable peace requires comprehensive agreements addressing the legitimate concerns of all participating factions rather than selective accommodation of individual interests.

Moscow-Astana strategic alignment

The diplomatic consultations also encompassed bilateral matters between the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan. Lavrov conveyed appreciation for Nur-Sultan's nuanced understanding and even-handed evaluation of the Ukraine situation. Regarding the protracted military engagement between Moscow and Kyiv, he reaffirmed Russia's readiness to reinitiate peace discussions predicated upon previously established understandings with American officials. Specifically, he referenced commitments arising from the August summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held in Alaska, anticipating their faithful implementation.

Expanding diplomatic infrastructure

Bilateral cooperation is set to deepen through enhanced consular presence, as preparations for establishing a Russian Consulate General in Aktau enter their concluding phases. The officials additionally reviewed upcoming high-level engagements, including a scheduled state visit by President Putin to the Central Asian republic next month. These developments signal both nations' commitment to fortifying their strategic partnership while maintaining the Caspian region as a sanctuary from external geopolitical turbulence.
