Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to implement a temporary 48-hour ceasefire following a recent escalation of military clashes along their shared border. The truce, which was officially confirmed by statements from both Islamabad and Kabul on Wednesday, is set to de-escalate tensions and provide a window for diplomatic negotiations.

The ceasefire officially took effect at 6 p.m. local time (1300 GMT). A statement from Pakistan's Foreign Ministry indicated that both nations will engage in "sincere" efforts to resolve what it described as a "complicated but solvable" issue through constructive dialogue. The Afghan interim administration's spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed the agreement, stating that Kabul has instructed all its forces to respect the ceasefire unless faced with any aggression.

Precision Strikes Preceded Agreement

The announcement came hours after Pakistani security sources reported conducting "precision strikes" inside Afghanistan. These aerial operations, which targeted the southern Kandahar province and the capital, Kabul, were described as focusing exclusively on hideouts used by the Afghan Taliban and the Khawarij, a reference to the Tehreek-e-Taliban militant group. The border region has been volatile since Tuesday night, with Kabul reporting that 12 Afghan nationals were killed in clashes with Pakistani forces.

A Pattern of Escalation and Mediation

This is the second such ceasefire agreement in a matter of days, following deadly clashes over the weekend that resulted in dozens of military and civilian casualties. Those earlier tensions, which were among the most severe since the Afghan Taliban regained power in 2021, were previously halted through mediation efforts by Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The recurring violence underscores the fragile security situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
