Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced early Monday that the United States and Iran have reached a comprehensive peace agreement following intensive negotiations, with both sides declaring an immediate and permanent end to military operations across all fronts including Lebanon. The official signing ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 19 in Switzerland, according to the Pakistani premier.
Sharif extended thanks to regional powers that contributed to the negotiations, specifically acknowledging Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye for their roles in facilitating the agreement. "We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in this mediation effort, the great leadership of the State of Qatar, for their support in reaching this agreement," he said, adding that he would especially thank the visionary leadership of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Türkiye for their immense contributions.
Trump confirms deal, reopens Hormuz
US President Donald Trump confirmed the agreement late Sunday, announcing he was authorizing the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the American naval blockade. "The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!," Trump declared in a post on his Truth Social platform. He signaled the resumption of maritime traffic by writing: "Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!"
The war began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched military action against Iran, prompting Tehran's retaliation against American allies in the Gulf and the subsequent blocking of the strategic waterway. Mediators will hold a series of meetings this week ahead of the June 19 signing ceremony to prepare technical talks and implementation protocols for the agreement.
