Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss the status of Moscow's military bases in Syria during upcoming talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in the Russian capital. The meeting marks Sharaa's first official visit to Russia since taking office and will also address bilateral relations and Middle East developments.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to discuss the situation surrounding Moscow's military bases in Syria during forthcoming talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the agenda, stating that the topic would naturally arise during their conversation in the Russian capital.

Agenda and Expectations

"It's obvious that this will be touched upon one way or another during the conversation. Yes, this can be expected," Peskov told journalists during a regular press briefing. He added that no press conference is planned following the discussions between the two leaders. The meeting represents President Sharaa's first official visit to Russia since assuming office in December 2024, signaling continued close ties between Moscow and Damascus.

Comprehensive Bilateral Discussions

According to an earlier Kremlin statement, the presidents will review the current state and future prospects of Russian-Syrian relations, with particular focus on trade and economic cooperation. The talks will also address recent developments across the Middle East region, where both nations maintain significant strategic interests. Syria remains a crucial partner for Russia in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Russia's Military Footprint in Syria

Moscow maintains two key military facilities in Syria that are central to its regional presence: a naval base in the port city of Tartus and the Hmeimim air base. Both installations are strategically positioned along Syria's Mediterranean coastline, providing Russia with permanent military access to the region. These bases have been operational since Russia's military intervention in the Syrian conflict began in 2015.
