Russian drone hits Chinese vessel near Odesa, Kyiv says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Ukraine accused Russia of striking a Chinese merchant ship during overnight drone attacks targeting the Black Sea port of Odesa. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow could not have failed to identify the vessel, while Ukrainian naval officials described the incident as an unusual escalation in regional maritime tensions.

Ukraine said a Russian drone attack overnight damaged a Chinese merchant vessel sailing near the Black Sea port city of Odesa, adding a new dimension to tensions surrounding maritime security in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed Moscow was fully aware of the ship’s identity before the strike occurred.

Black Sea tensions deepen

In a statement shared on X, Zelenskyy argued that Russian forces “could not have been unaware” that the vessel operating in Ukrainian territorial waters was Chinese-owned. The Ukrainian leader linked the incident to Russia’s continuing air assaults on critical infrastructure and shipping routes along the Black Sea coast.

Odesa, one of Ukraine’s most strategic port cities, has remained a frequent target since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. The city plays a key role in grain exports and maritime trade routes connecting the Black Sea to global markets, including Türkiye and other regional economies.

Ukrainian navy raises questions

Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said the ship was struck during a wave of overnight attacks involving Iranian-designed Shahed drones. According to Ukrainian authorities, no crew members were injured in the incident.

Pletenchuk questioned whether the strike was intentional, writing on Facebook that it was difficult to understand what motivated Russian forces to “target” a Chinese commercial vessel. He also mocked the possibility that Moscow could describe the attack as an accident.

No response yet from Moscow or Beijing

Neither Russia nor China had issued an official statement on the Ukrainian allegations as of Monday afternoon. Beijing has maintained close diplomatic and economic ties with Moscow throughout the war, while also presenting itself as a neutral actor in international negotiations.

The reported strike is likely to attract wider international attention because of China’s growing commercial presence in Black Sea shipping routes. The region remains strategically important for energy transit, food exports and maritime trade involving Ukraine, Russia and neighboring countries including Türkiye.
