Despite year-long US-led multinational military effort, group increased terror attacks in past 90 days, recent study shows
Average daily attacks carried out by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) worldwide increased dramatically in past three months, despite the US-led campaign against the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria, according to new data published on Thursday.
The study data, released by IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Center, shows that the ISIL attacks soared in the 3rd quarter of 2015 compared to the previous quarter.
The increase was reflected both in terms of the number of casualties and frequency of the attacks, mostly inside Syria and Iraq.
The HIS consulting and analysis firm reported a total of 1,086 attacks worldwide from July through the end of September 2015, with a 42 percent increase in the daily average. The figure showed that the average daily number of attacks jumped to 11.8 from 8.3 in the previous three months.
The attacks killed 2,978 people, a 65 percent increase from the preceding quarter.
The IHS report said the true number of attacks by the militant group was likely “far higher," emphasizing that the agency relies on open-source intelligence and only records incidents confirmed by governments or claimed by the group itself.
IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Center report come just one day after FBI Director James Comey claimed a dramatic decrease in ISIL recruitment over the same span, suggesting ISIL is “faltering" in the face of growing FBI pressure against them.
IHS head Matthew Henman also said ISIL's focus seems to be shifting away from trying to capture new territory and instead focusing on consolidating control over existing territory and eliminating ongoing resistance in areas it controls.
"We're probably more in a consolidation phase currently where the group is stabilizing gains its made and protecting those gains," he told NBC news.
The report makes clear that despite continuous airstrikes by multinational military jets, the militant group is still capable of carrying out constant attacks across a wide geographic area, including Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, the North Caucasus and Algeria in addition to its strongholds in Iraq and Syria.
The US-led international coalition has failed to prevent the group from becoming a consistent global threat, the report concludes.
