Sudan's El-Fasher sees massive exodus as RSF takes control
AA
A boat carrying 130 migrants, including 18 women and 6 girls, from Egypt, Eritrea, and Sudan, departed from Libya at 4:00 a.m. on August 26, 2025, attempting to reach Europe. After a fishing vessel alerted about their position, the rescue ship Astral, operated by the NGO Open Arms, approached to distribute life jackets and water to those on board. Later, the Italian Coast Guard arrived and transferred all the passengers to safety.

A massive humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Sudan's Darfur region as tens of thousands flee the RSF-controlled city of El-Fasher. Over one million displaced people have overwhelmed neighboring towns, creating catastrophic conditions with severe malnutrition and inadequate medical care. Humanitarian groups are issuing urgent appeals for international intervention as the situation rapidly deteriorates.

A catastrophic displacement crisis is intensifying in western Sudan as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces consolidate control over El-Fasher, sending terrified civilians fleeing for their lives. The strategic North Darfur city's capture has triggered a massive exodus, with over 30,000 people abandoning their homes in just 48 hours to escape reported atrocities committed by the rebel group.Overwhelmed Reception Areas

The neighboring towns of Tawila and Jebel Marra are now sheltering more than one million displaced persons who have arrived from various conflict-affected areas throughout the region. According to local emergency response coordinators, this massive influx is creating unbearable pressure on already limited resources and essential services. The International Organization for Migration has documented that more than 36,000 people fled El-Fasher during a recent four-day period alone.

Severe Humanitarian Consequences

Medical facilities in reception areas are operating beyond capacity while facing critical shortages of medicines and emergency supplies. A dire assessment from humanitarian workers indicates approximately 750 children are suffering from malnutrition at various severity levels, while 318 unaccompanied minors require immediate psychological support. The situation is further complicated by hundreds of patients with chronic conditions and injured individuals who cannot access proper treatment.

Appeals for Emergency Response

Local emergency rooms coordinating the crisis response have issued urgent calls for the United Nations to activate a multi-agency emergency operation. They specifically requested the establishment of secure transit corridors along the El-Fasher-Tawila route to ensure safe passage for civilians and humanitarian deliveries. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF paramilitary forces, which began in April 2023, has already displaced over 15 million people nationwide according to United Nations estimates.
