United States President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has called on Russia to prioritize ending the conflict in Ukraine over testing new missile systems. Responding to Moscow's recent Burevestnik missile test, Trump emphasized American military capabilities while criticizing Russia's continued weapons development during ongoing hostilities.

US President Donald Trump has challenged Russia to redirect its focus from missile development to ending the Ukraine war, following Moscow's announcement of a new nuclear-capable weapons test. The comments came during the president's travel through Asia, underscoring ongoing diplomatic tensions.

Response to Russian Missile Test

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while en route from Malaysia to Japan, Trump addressed Russia's recent completion of its Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile test. He downplayed the significance of the long-range weapon, stating, "We test missiles all the time," while highlighting the proximity of US strategic assets. "We have a nuclear submarine 'right off their shores' that does not need to travel such distances," he noted.

Direct Appeal to End Hostilities

The president directly advised Russian leadership to concentrate on peace efforts. "You ought to get the war ended ... instead of testing missiles," Trump asserted. This public commentary represents the latest effort by the Trump administration to mediate the conflict since his second term began in January, though previous planned diplomatic engagements have been cancelled.

Stalled Diplomatic Efforts

Trump's diplomatic outreach has faced challenges, including a cancelled summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that was scheduled for Budapest this month. The president indicated the meeting was called off to avoid a "wasted meeting." Meanwhile, Russia has maintained its position against Western demands to freeze the conflict along current front lines, creating continued obstacles to negotiation.
