Police detain 30 people for having links to the PKK terror organization in the Lice district of eastern Diyarbakır province
Thirty suspects have been detained in counterterror operation launched against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) by Turkish security forces in Diyarbakır's Lice district.
Governorship of Diyarbakır issued a statement saying that Turkish armed forces launched a wide-range operation between Oct. 15 and Oct. 17 in order to destroy shelters and depots of the terrorist organization, to defuse explosives-planted highways and to abolish drug fields.
During the search operation, security forces seized 400 kilograms of drugs, 600 kilograms of hemp, along with various kinds of guns and organizational documents.
It is also stated that the counterterror operation is named “Martry Specialist Sergeant Latif Adıgüzel” after the sergeant who was killed during the clash with outlawed PKK militants on Aug. 18.
The PKK is listed by the U.S., Turkey and the EU as a terrorist group. It has claimed the lives of around 40,000 people during its bloody campaign to carve a Kurdish self-rule in the southeast of the country since 1984.
A cease-fire had been observed at the end of October 2012, but was broken when the outlawed organization resumed its attacks after a suicide bombing in July this year in Suruç, a town on the border with Syria.
