Best of their kind: Turkey’s TB2 drones featured in Netflix’s latest spy series

Turkey’s globally lauded TB2 drones have taken center stage in an episode of the new Netflix series called “Spycraft.”

The eight-episode series, which is currently streaming on the global platform boasting 200 million subscribers, examines the latest in espionage and intelligence technology in an episodic format.

Featured in the first episode, titled “High-tech Surveillance and an Eye in the Sky,” Turkey’s Bayraktar TB2 drones and their control rooms are showcased throughout, as the series stresses the importance of the role played by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in intelligence work.

At one point, the series makes the case for drones gaining prominence over satellites as a surveillance tool.

“Drones are replacing satellites. They can hover in place and provide you, literally, with that mobile eye in the sky that you can deploy to anywhere you want. You’re not risking a human pilot. So the modern-day drone is the ideal eye-in-the-sky for tactical situations,” an expert explains.

The episode is intercut with several footage showing TB2 drones bearing the Turkish flag, taking viewers behind closed doors with an exclusive look at what goes on in the control rooms during aerial operations.

The Bayraktar TB2 armed UAV was developed and manufactured by Turkish defense company Baykar Technologies.

It has been used by the Turkish Armed Forces and Turkey's Security Directorate since 2015, most recently credited for Azerbaijan’s military success in the Karabakh conflict.

The TB2 armed UAV was developed for tactical reconnaissance and surveillance missions; it can also carry ammo and conduct assaults with a laser-target designator.
