Full membership Turkey's strategic goal; visa-free deal will speed process, President Erdoğan says
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that to become a member of the European Union (EU) was Turkey's long-term goal.
In a written statement on Europe Day, Erdoğan said that Turkey has been waiting for nearly 50 years for EU membership. He added that accepting Turkey's visa-free deal would be a tiny bit of satisfaction of expectations from Ankara.
He also hoped that the visa-free agreement would accelerate Turkey's full EU membership process.
Erdoğan also said that the EU should show a strong stance in its fight against terrorism.
