The prosecutor declares the deadliest attacks in the country's history meant to damage political stability in Turkey ahead of general elections
The Ankara chief public prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday that initial findings indicate one of the main purposes of the twin suicide explosions in Ankara was to disrupt Turkey's political stability by sabotating the upcoming elections.
“The data obtained from digital materials show that the fatal incidents are intended to expand terror attacks and suspend early elections," the prosecutor's office said.
The prosecutor also disclosed that the explosions also aim to prevent efforts to form a new government that is expected to emerge from the current political landscape.
The prosecutor's office has also confirmed that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) operation in Syria is closely linked with the terrorist attack.
The statement has identified the armed group behind the attack as a cell-type terrorist group, based in the province of Gaziantep. “The Gaziantep-based group has been involved in terror activities across Turkey on orders of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant operation in Syria," the prosecutor's office said.
The double suicide bombing explosions, which took place at a peace rally on October 10 near the central train station in Ankara, claimed the lives of 102 and injured 589 more.
