Gendarmerie believe a PKK strike has been foiled
A bomb-laden tractor was found in a suspected PKK attack in Yenişehir town of Diyarbakır, a province in the Southeast.
The tractor containing explosives was discovered in a rural part of Yenişehir during an anti-terror operation.
The incident took place at 10:30 am in a rural area of Yenişehir.
The gendarmerie stopped a tractor carrying two persons to stop after suspecting the men in the vehicle could have link to Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Clashes erupted when the men in the tractor fired on security forces. One of the terrorists was killed in the exchange of fire with the gendarmerie, while the other escaped the scene.
A
controlled explosion
was carried out on the vehicle, in which a cache of weapons was confiscated.
It is still unclear where the PKK was planning to use the bomb-laden vehicle and how the attack would occur.
The gendarmerie opened an investigation to find out the intended target. The investigation is still underway.
PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU, has been carrying out terror attacks mostly in southeast Turkey, since 1984.
The conflict between PKK has claimed more than 40,000 lives in 30 years.
