The head of the Association of Justice Defenders Strategic Studies Center Adnan Tanrıverdi has said that the May 27, 1960 Turkish coup d'état was “an irredeemable black mark" on Turkish political history.
"The coup paved the way for the following 1971 memorandum, 1980 coup, 1997 postmodern coup and 2007 e-memorandum and damaged our democracy, " said the retired brigadier.
"The May 27 coup targeted the values the government represented," he added.
The Turkish coup of May 27th was the first coup d'état in history of the Republic of Turkey.
The coup was staged by a group of Turkish military officers acting outside the Staff Chiefs' chain of command, against the democratically elected government of the Democrat Party on 27 May 1960.
Former Prime Minister Adnan Menderes was executed along with his Foreign Minister Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and Finance Minister Hasan Polatkan following the May 27, 1960 military coup.
