The newly-elected AK Party chair says new cabinet to be named soon
Prime Minister-designate Binali Yıldırım told reporters on Monday the new cabinet list would be prepared quickly and be presented to President Tayyip Erdogan when he was available.
Erdoğan requested Yıldırım, an Izmir deputy and his close ally, to form the country's 65th government after he was officially elected the ruling Justice and Development Party's third and last chair at the party congress on Sunday.
Yildirim was the sole candidate for party chair at the extraordinary congress in Ankara.
Yıldırım, who was serving as Transformation Minister in the 54th Turkish cabinet, was due to present the cabinet list on Monday. He is expected to submit the new cabinet for presidential approval on Tuesday, after the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) completes.
Meanwhile, some AK Party sources say the new cabinet could be named late Monday as the President is in Istanbul for Monday and Tuesday to play host to the WHS.
Yıldırım's promotion came after his predecessor Ahmet Davutoğlu resigned following Sunday's party convention.
What is clear is that the new AK Party leader will support Erdoğan's bid to present a new constitution to Turkey. “Turkey needs a new constitution," Yıldırım told his party congress, to enthusiastic applause.
He seems to be ready for a constitutional change which may scrap his role effectively amid hot discussions over a new presidential model for Erdoğan's role, which means the elected President will be a MP or chair of a political party.
Erdogan came to office in 2014 when he became the first-ever president elected by direct national vote. Presidents had been elected by parliament in the past.
