Turkey destroys terrorist targets in Iraq's north
Turkish military aircraft launched airstrikes Monday to hit Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq, the military has said.
“The warplanes struck previously-identified targets such as gun positions, caves, shelters and bunkers in the Metina region. The strikes were conducted between 04:28 am and 05:34 am,” the General Staff said on its official site later the same day.
The jets carried out the air raids and safely returned back to their bases.
Works are still ongoing to assess the damage in the region.
Turkey has conducted strikes on the separatist group's bases on both sides of the Iraq-Turkey border. The strikes against PKK camps resumed on July 24 after two police officers were found dead in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa.
The PKK claimed responsibility for the slayings, which were in reprisalfor a suicide bombing which left more than 30 people dead in Suruç town. They called off a ceasefire that had held since 2013 and resumed attacks.
Officials in Ankara said it was impossible to continue the reconciliation process with “those who threaten national unity and brotherhood.”
Turkey, the EU and the US regard the PKK as a terrorist organization
