Amazon Web Services experienced major service disruptions in its United Arab Emirates region Sunday after a data center fire triggered by objects striking the facility, the company announced. "At around 4:30 AM PST one of our Availability Zones was impacted by objects that struck the data center, creating sparks and fire," AWS stated, noting that local fire departments shut off power to the facility and generators during extinguishing operations.

In its latest update early Monday, AWS indicated that "full recovery is still expected to be many hours away," recommending customers "backup any critical data to another AWS Region."
