Amazon Web Services reported significant service disruptions in its UAE region Sunday after a data center caught fire following impact by objects. The company warned that full recovery would take "many hours" and urged customers to back up critical data. The incident coincides with escalating military conflict following US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Amazon Web Services experienced major service disruptions in its United Arab Emirates region Sunday after a data center fire triggered by objects striking the facility, the company announced. "At around 4:30 AM PST one of our Availability Zones was impacted by objects that struck the data center, creating sparks and fire," AWS stated, noting that local fire departments shut off power to the facility and generators during extinguishing operations.

Ongoing Recovery and Customer Advisory

In its latest update early Monday, AWS indicated that "full recovery is still expected to be many hours away," recommending customers "backup any critical data to another AWS Region." The disruption affects multiple cloud services in the region, impacting businesses and organizations reliant on AWS infrastructure for their operations. The company continues to assess damage and work toward restoring normal functionality.

Regional Conflict Context

The AWS facility incident comes amid dramatically escalating military conflict across the Gulf region. Saturday's large-scale US-Israeli attack on Iran killed several senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US assets. The broader hostilities have already disrupted air travel and regional infrastructure, with this data center fire adding to the growing list of operational challenges facing the Gulf region.
