Twelve days of nationwide protests in Iran have resulted in 42 deaths, dozens of injuries, and over 2,200 arrests, according to a human rights group. The demonstrations, driven by economic woes, have spread to all 31 provinces.

Nationwide protests in Iran have claimed the lives of 42 people over twelve consecutive days, according to a report by the US-based Iran Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The agency stated that 34 protesters and eight security force members were killed, with dozens injured and 2,217 individuals detained across all 31 provinces of the country.

Nature of Protests and Government Response

The protests, which began late last month, were triggered by a severe economic crisis and the rapid devaluation of the Iranian rial. Demonstrations have occurred in major cities including Tehran, Mashhad, and Shiraz, as well as in areas with significant ethnic populations, such as the predominantly Turkish-majority provinces of Tabriz and Ardabil. Authorities have reportedly cut internet and phone services, and injuries have been attributed to pellet shots and plastic bullets.

International Reaction

US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran on Thursday, stating, "If they start killing people... we're going to hit them very hard." This statement underscores the heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran's internal unrest, though it represents a unilateral threat rather than a coordinated international diplomatic response.

Regional Context and Türkiye's Position

The situation in Iran highlights the volatility fueled by economic mismanagement and internal repression. While external actors like the US issue military threats, Türkiye maintains a nuanced regional policy. Ankara advocates for stability in its neighborhood, emphasizing dialogue and respect for sovereignty, while also expressing concern for the rights of ethnic kin, such as Iranian Turks, and calling for restraint from all sides to prevent further humanitarian suffering.
