Relatives grieve for the death of a 43-year-old Cambodian man after he died in an artillery shelling near the border today, as the total death toll in the border conflict rises, in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, on December 17, 2025. Deaths in the conflict have risen to over 52 as fighting between the Thai and Cambodian forces has not seen signs of de-escalation. Hostilities between the two Southeast Asian nations resumed earlier this month, with them trading missile strikes and artillery rounds along the border areas, killing civilians and soldiers on both sides. The renewed conflict followed a ceasefire deal brokered by United States President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after Cambodia and Thailand engaged in a military conflict over territorial disputes.

Fighting along the Thai-Cambodian border has claimed 96 lives and displaced nearly one million people since clashes resumed on December 8. Military talks are underway in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province, with a key meeting between defense ministers scheduled for Saturday.

The death toll from ongoing border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia has risen to 96 as hostilities enter their 18th day. Both nations have reported civilian and military casualties, with nearly one million people displaced since fighting erupted on December 8.

Civilian Casualties and Accusations

Cambodia’s Defense Ministry accused Thai forces of artillery strikes in Banteay Meanchey province on Thursday, killing one Cambodian civilian. Cambodia’s National Assembly condemned what it called Thailand’s “brutal and inhumane invasion.” Thailand claimed Cambodia fired BM-21 rockets into Sa Kaeo province, damaging civilian infrastructure. Thai authorities reported 23 soldiers and one civilian killed, with 41 civilian deaths attributed to “collateral effects.” Cambodia’s Interior Ministry stated 31 Cambodian civilians have died.

Humanitarian Crisis and Displacement

The conflict has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing approximately 610,000 Cambodians and over 150,000 Thais, according to official reports. Earlier estimates suggested up to 400,000 displacements on the Thai side. Aid efforts are strained as families flee border villages amid continued shelling and insecurity.

Diplomatic Efforts and Military Talks

Military talks began Wednesday in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province and are expected to continue through the week. A General Border Committee meeting co-chaired by both countries’ defense ministers is scheduled for Saturday. Thailand has warned it will not sign agreements unless technical frameworks are resolved, underscoring the fragility of negotiations.
