Heavy rains flood displacement tents in Gaza for third day

Palestinians who lost their homes in two years of Israeli attacks continue to live among the rubble of destroyed buildings in northern Gaza’s Jabalia Camp, struggling to meet basic needs and cope with cold weather conditions, on November 16, 2025.

Torrential rains have flooded dozens of tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza's Al-Mawasi area for the third consecutive day. The severe weather has collapsed thousands of tents, forcing families to seek refuge in structurally compromised buildings amid catastrophic humanitarian conditions.

Heavy rainfall has inundated numerous tents housing displaced families in Gaza's Al-Mawasi region near Khan Younis, marking the third consecutive day of severe weather conditions affecting the territory. According to Gaza's Civil Defense authorities, the ongoing weather depression has brought cold temperatures, strong winds, and substantial precipitation to the coastal enclave, with meteorological services anticipating conditions to improve by Sunday evening.

Structural Collapses and Safety Concerns

Powerful storm winds have caused the collapse or displacement of thousands of temporary shelters, leaving numerous families without protection and compelling many to seek refuge in buildings damaged during previous military operations. The Civil Defense agency issued renewed warnings about "the risk of destroyed, structurally unstable buildings collapsing on their occupants" due to the combined effects of heavy rain and strong winds on already compromised structures.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Appeals

Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal characterized the situation as a "large-scale disaster caused by the storm that hit Gaza amid the massive destruction inflicted by Israel during two years of genocide." He urgently appealed to the international community to assume responsibility and provide immediate relief assistance to the Palestinian population, emphasizing that "every passing second brings more harm and pain to the Palestinian people" under the current conditions.

Displacement Statistics and Living Conditions

According to the Gaza Media Office, approximately 1.5 million Palestinians remain displaced throughout the territory, enduring catastrophic living conditions with severely limited access to basic necessities and essential services. The humanitarian situation has been dramatically exacerbated by Israel's ongoing blockade, which continues to restrict the entry of adequate shelter materials and emergency supplies despite the deteriorating weather conditions and widespread destruction from military operations.
