Floods displace 168 families, damage 271 homes in southern Sudan

The International Organization for Migration said on Thursday that heavy rains and floods have displaced 168 families and destroyed or damaged 271 homes in Abu Kershola locality in Sudan's South Kordofan state, forcing residents to flee approximately 10 villages.

Widespread destruction in South Kordofan

The UN migration agency's field teams reported that 138 homes were completely destroyed while 133 others sustained partial damage. The displaced families have taken shelter in temporary sites located in open areas within the same locality, according to the statement. Sudan typically experiences heavy rains during the autumn season from June to October, which regularly cause flooding in multiple regions.

Conflict compounds humanitarian crisis

The flooding occurs as Sudan grapples with a devastating civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces that has raged since April 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced approximately 13 million, triggering one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The ongoing violence has severely restricted the country's capacity to respond to natural disasters, leaving affected populations increasingly vulnerable.
