Bhumjaithai Party leader wins parliamentary vote with 293 lawmakers' support, comfortably exceeding 249-vote threshold in 500-seat house.

Anutin Charnvirakul was re-elected as Thailand's prime minister Thursday after securing decisive backing from lawmakers in the country's lower house. The 59-year-old leader of the conservative Bhumjaithai Party received 293 votes in the 500-seat House of Representatives, well above the 249 needed for victory.

Coalition support secures victory

Anutin's nearest rival garnered 119 votes, while 86 lawmakers abstained from the ballot, with 497 of 500 members present for the vote. His re-election as Thailand's 32nd prime minister follows last month's general election in which his party emerged as the largest force, winning 193 seats—though short of the 251 required to govern independently. The People's Party secured 118 seats, Pheu Thai won 74, and the Democrat Party took 22 seats.

Pheu Thai throws weight behind Anutin

A key development in Anutin's path to re-election came when the Pheu Thai Party, backed by influential former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, announced its support for the Bhumjaithai leader. The backing from the second-largest party bloc helped consolidate the parliamentary majority needed to return Anutin to office. He was first elected prime minister on Sept. 5 last year.

Stable leadership continues

The re-election ensures continuity in Thai governance as the kingdom navigates regional and domestic challenges. Anutin's conservative platform and coalition-building skills have enabled him to maintain power despite his party lacking an absolute majority, demonstrating the stability of Thailand's post-election political arrangements.
