A planned meeting between the top diplomats of the United States and Russia has been postponed, media outlets report, delaying a potential new summit between Presidents Trump and Putin. The pause in talks is attributed to differing views on resolving the Ukraine conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone call, but US officials found Moscow's stance still too "maximalist."

The anticipated diplomatic engagement between the United States and Russia has hit a significant roadblock, with a key preparatory meeting between their senior officials being postponed. This development effectively delays a potential new summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the two global powers remain at odds over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Diplomatic Stalemate Over Ukraine

According to reports from CNN, the planned in-person meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has been put on hold. While no official reason was immediately given, sources indicate that the central point of contention is the conflicting perspectives on how to end the Russia-Ukraine war. This diplomatic impasse underscores the deep-seated challenges in finding common ground between Washington and Moscow.

Phone Call Fails to Bridge the Gap

The two top diplomats did connect via a phone call on Monday to discuss "next steps" following a recent conversation between Trump and Putin. The US State Department stated that Rubio emphasized the importance of using future engagements to collaborate on a durable resolution for the Russia-Ukraine war, aligning with President Trump's vision. While the Kremlin described the call as "constructive," US officials concluded afterwards that the Russian position had not moved sufficiently beyond its initial, hardline demands.

Path Forward for Trump-Putin Meeting

For now, Secretary Rubio is not expected to recommend proceeding with the Trump-Putin summit, which had been tentatively considered for Budapest, Hungary. However, the door remains open for further discussions between the two diplomats. The last face-to-face meeting between the two presidents occurred over two months ago in Anchorage, Alaska, and concluded without a concrete agreement. The White House reiterated President Trump's commitment to a peaceful resolution, with Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stating, "He has courageously engaged parties on all sides and will do everything in his power to achieve peace."
