UK Maritime Trade Operations reported early Tuesday that a vessel sustained engine room damage and suffered a crew casualty after being struck by an unknown projectile during an outbound transit through the strategic waterway, as Omani authorities assist the remaining crew and investigate the incident.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said early Tuesday that a merchant vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting outbound through the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to the engine room and resulting in one crew casualty. The incident prompted immediate assistance from regional authorities as tensions continue to simmer in the critical shipping lane amid ongoing hostilities between Washington and Tehran.

Engine room damaged

"The Company Security Officer has reported that the vessel was struck by an unknown projectile while conducting an outbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz. The impact caused damage to the engine room and resulted in a crew casualty," UKMTO said in a statement. The remaining crew members are currently receiving assistance from the Omani Coast Guard, according to the maritime security organization.

No environmental impact has been reported from the incident, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. UKMTO added that vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz should exercise heightened caution and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Strategic waterway tensions

The Strait of Hormuz has witnessed escalating tensions amid the ongoing war between the United States and Iran, raising concerns over potential disruptions to global shipping routes and energy supplies. Diplomatic efforts to consolidate understandings on freedom of navigation through the strategic chokepoint have so far failed to prevent violent incidents targeting commercial traffic.
