Germany calls for international security force for post-war Gaza

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has outlined a comprehensive proposal for Gaza's post-conflict security framework, emphasizing the need for an international stabilization force combined with Palestinian police units. Speaking in Brussels ahead of an EU foreign ministers meeting, Wadephul stated that the recently adopted UN Security Council resolution provides the necessary legal foundation for implementing this security architecture in the war-torn territory.

EU Support for Implementation

The German minister confirmed the European Union's readiness to contribute significantly to the security plan, noting that existing EU missions in the region could be activated and strengthened to support the effort. "We remain ready to provide practical support. This means that the existing EU missions can be activated and strengthened," Wadephul stated, referring to the bloc's police and border-security missions that could play a crucial role in the proposed security arrangement.

Regional Cooperation and Training

Wadephul highlighted the importance of cooperation with Israel and regional partners in establishing the new security framework. He revealed that neighboring countries Jordan and Egypt have already expressed willingness to train the new Palestinian police force, creating a multinational approach to Gaza's security needs. The minister noted his repeated discussions with Israeli counterparts and expressed hope that a comprehensive agreement could be reached quickly to move the process forward.

International Framework

The German proposal aligns with and reinforces US President Donald Trump's Gaza ceasefire plan, which Berlin has strongly supported. The UN Security Council resolution provides international legitimacy for the envisioned security structure, potentially paving the way for a more stable post-conflict environment in Gaza while addressing both Israeli security concerns and Palestinian governance needs in the territory.
