Spanish PM hails US-Iran deal as end to 'senselessness'

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday hailed the announcement of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, stating that the accord could bring an end to the "senselessness" that has gripped the region. "We trust that the peace agreement announced today will serve to put an end to this senselessness, that it will be respected by all parties, and that it will thus mark the beginning of a new era in the Middle East," Sanchez said through the social media platform X.

Conflict's devastating toll

The Spanish leader recalled that the war has claimed more than 7,400 lives in Iran and destroyed hundreds of homes, schools, and hospitals since fighting erupted. He also noted that the conflict has triggered widespread price increases and billions of euros in losses for Europe, underscoring the economic shockwaves extending far beyond the battlefield.

Sanchez urged caution alongside celebration, stressing that the bloodshed of recent weeks must serve as a lesson for future generations. "Let us celebrate. But let us not forget. And let us finally learn that war is a failure. Dialogue and diplomacy are the only path forward," he added, according to Anadolu Agency.
