US President Donald Trump said Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has committed to expanding North Sea oil production, describing the move as a major opportunity for the UK's economy. The remarks come as London's reported plans to increase offshore drilling are expected to reignite debate over energy security, economic growth and climate policy.

US President Donald Trump said Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to significantly expand oil exploration in the North Sea, arguing that greater use of the UK's offshore energy resources could strengthen the country's economy. Speaking at the White House, Trump said the issue was discussed directly with Burnham during a recent conversation.

Bold push for North Sea energy

Trump welcomed what he described as Burnham's commitment to increasing offshore oil production, saying, "He did say one very good thing. He said he's going to open up North Sea oil. If he does that, you're going to be a wealthy country." He contrasted Burnham's reported position with that of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom he said had resisted similar calls.

The US president added that he had repeatedly encouraged previous British leadership to make greater use of domestic energy resources. "I was telling Prime Minister Starmer, 'Open up the North Sea!'" Trump said, arguing that the UK possesses some of the world's most valuable offshore oil reserves but has failed to fully capitalize on them.

Energy policy back in focus

According to Trump, Burnham assured him that the UK's approach to North Sea oil would change under the new government. British media reported last week that the new administration is expected to move rapidly to expand oil and natural gas production as part of broader efforts to address the country's cost-of-living challenges and reinforce long-term energy security.

Supporters of increased domestic drilling argue that higher North Sea production could reduce dependence on international energy markets, strengthen supply resilience and support economic growth. They also see expanded offshore development as a way to improve the UK's strategic energy position.

Climate debate likely to intensify

The reported policy shift is also expected to fuel renewed discussion over Britain's climate commitments. Environmental groups have long argued that approving additional fossil fuel projects could complicate the country's transition toward renewable energy and its long-term emissions targets.

Burnham has presented his wider economic strategy under the concept of "Manchesterism," a model emphasizing decentralization, stronger state involvement in strategic sectors and policies designed to stimulate sustainable economic growth across the United Kingdom.
