Türkiye has renewed its call for comprehensive United Nations reform, particularly targeting the Security Council's structure, during the world body's 80th anniversary proceedings. Turkish diplomats emphasized the need for a more democratic and representative global governance system.

Türkiye has intensified its campaign for substantial United Nations reform during the organization's 80th anniversary commemorations, with Turkish diplomats advocating for a more democratic and effective Security Council structure. Speaking before the UN Security Council on Friday, Türkiye's representative Kemal Onur Ekren emphasized that the current geopolitical landscape requires fundamental changes to the international body's governance mechanisms to address contemporary global challenges adequately.

Multilateral Commitment and Reform Vision

Ekren reaffirmed Türkiye's steadfast commitment to multilateralism as a founding UN member state while stressing the urgent need for institutional modernization. "As we mark 80 years of this indispensable organization, we have the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism and principles of the UN while taking stock of the long-term vision that will define its future," he stated. The diplomat positioned the UN as a crucial forum for diplomatic cooperation and a beacon for underrepresented global voices.

Security Council Transformation

The Turkish representative specifically targeted the Security Council's composition and operational methods, arguing that its current configuration and frequent paralysis undermine UN credibility. "Türkiye would like to see a more democratic, representative, transparent, effective and accountable Security Council," Ekren declared, echoing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's longstanding "The world is bigger than five" mantra that challenges the disproportionate influence wielded by the five permanent veto-holding members.

Institutional Modernization Efforts

Türkiye's diplomatic push aligns with broader UN80 reform initiatives aimed at enhancing the organization's operational efficiency and responsiveness. Ekren underscored the importance of creating a UN structure "more agile, transparent, and responsive" to evolving international needs while possessing adequate resources to uphold peace and security principles. This position reflects Türkiye's consistent advocacy for restructuring global governance institutions to better reflect 21st-century geopolitical realities rather than post-World War II power dynamics.
